Toubkal is a mountain peak in southwestern Morocco, located in the Toubkal National Park. At 4,167 metres (13,671 ft), it is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa. It is an ultra prominent peak located 63 km south of the city of Marrakesh.
There is few way to get to the Toubkal. You can rent a car, take a taxi (approx 180 MAD), take a sharing grande taxi (30 MAD), catch micro local bus (50 MAD), or hitchhike what is possible if you try to catch a lift on a road R203.
You have to go to Imlil, it is a small village according to Wikipedia but for me it is a small city, there is quite good base of hotels, hostels, restaurants and lots of shops.
You can stay a night in Imlil which is very pleasant village, as well you can go straight away to Toubkal Refuge, remember that this is hard and long way, 18 km uphill approx 4-5 hours. The track is easy to find even for not experienced hikers, whatsoever even if you confused on your way or a bit lost, you can meet many people and ask for Toubkal Refuge. There is two ways from Imlil to Toubkal, from downhill of the village and another a bit uphill. Thats the photo of beginning uphill way to Toubkal.
In my opinion you don’t have to hire guide, with common sense and carefullnes, you can make it by yourself, or with the group.
Toubkal Refuge is very busy place but it have amazing mountain atmosphere.
Bed in a room cost 105 MAD, breakfast 30 MAD, lunch 50 MAD, Dinner 70 MAD (may 2015). You can hire alpine equipment directly in refuge. You can spend few days in refuge climbing different peaks around. If you short on time, following day you have to wake up around 5-6 in the morning, final ascend will take you around 2-3 hours. During summer more less from may ascend should be easy and you dont need crampons and ice axe, whatever I climbed beginning of may and 95% of climbers have at least crampons cause of still large amount of snow. I was climbing Toubkal without crampons what wasn’t highly difficult. In my opinion Atlas is a great place to develop your alpinism skills.
View from the top is absolutely breathtaking.
